An Architecture for the Poor is about the experimental city New Gourna in Egypten, initiated by architect Hassan Fathy. His ideas were based on cooperative construction, inexpensive natural materials – sun-dried clay – and the idea that this type of construction would generate new cities in the same form, a mixture of international modernism and locally based Muslim architecture. The project became a failure, for different reasons, and the landless workers from the neighbouring sugar plantation moved in instead of the intended craftsmen.

Serien utgår från mitt intresse när en ny stadsplan genomförs och hur invånarna börjar ta platsen i anspråk. Staden Jakriborg är initierat av de två bröderna Jan och Krister Berggren, som köpte marken billigt under den svenska finanskrisen (under nittiotalet) och började bebygga under början av tvåtusentalet.

Indian Grammar expose Mats Erikssons photographs of Le Corbusier's Chandigarh in India. Of Corbusier as one of the modernism's main theoreticians, in his only implemented city plan. The photographs are divided in two categories: morphology (pictures of general architectural elements and details of specific interiors or exteriors in Chandigarh) and syntax (pictures of the city and its buildings as a concrete whole in a concrete place and how people in that particular place actually use them).

Indian Grammar is neither a celebration of local identities nor a detached scrutiny of utopian modernism. Chandigarh is looked upon as it appears now, when the buildings, streets and squares have been adapted to the needs of several generations of users. In countries like Sweden the icons of modernity have also undergone similar changes, through daily use. This perspective is also developed in two essays, one from a Swedish context – by Gertrud Sandqvist – and one from an Indian context – by Chandigarh born Vikramaditya Prakash, today professor of Architecture at Washington University.
